AOL Mobile Web Site

AOL is from now on available in Mobile Internet beside its PC and WAP versions. The site includes all the useful options and features like Google and Yahoo - search, news, weather, sports and business - plus the links to Mapquest and MovieFone.

The AOL search engine works like that of Google - it does not search the mobile web, but returns transcoded versions of full PC web sites. It has its own pros and cons, but there is definitely a place for transcoding. AOL uses Google’s site index and the search engine is quite good. Once AOL was leading the market of mobile Internet search engines, but at the moment it is overtaken by Google.

AOL enables a new and quite attractive search type: Shopping search. It is more web shopping search than a local one. The search is based on the product rating, store rating and reviews. The only visible drawback of the feature is inability to buy something online. The engine will give you the link to where you can buy the thing.

To sum up, AOL falls behind the Big Three in Mobile web, though web shopping is a fresh and interesting feature. Nevertheless it still needs the ability to make purchases (the one Amazon mobile has for a long time) to become complete.
