Local Content via SMS: 80108 Media

It seems that SMS content is going mainstream in the U.S. A couple of companies caught a hold of the new area and are now creating quite an interesting content. The SMS messaging system uses mobile phone platform to create social networks, share content, organize groups e.t.c.

At the moment there are at least three major companies that entered the market: Mozes, Frengo, and the youngest one 80108 Media (launched its sms-based secvice last Monday).

The company’s idea is the following: create 70 different SMS networks in 15 cities. The hired “correspondents” supply you with the updated content on practically each branch of the social life: music, fashion e.t.c. You see the company’s service might become truly successful only in one case: if the information sent by the correspondents is really relevant, business- and ad-free, interesting and fresh. Otherwise I’m convinced that no one would want their inbox filled up and phone bills full of SMS charges.

The business model of 80108 seems to be quite an extraordinary one. They plan to create a huge network of SMS publications for the niche of the local content. They pay huge sums of money the the hired correspondents (it is just like paying to freelance workers).

The company has also drawn a list of things they are to excel at in order to win the market:

1. Programming / content

2. User experience

3. Marketing

The problem that might have been in the essence of the plan is a mixture of business and free content in SMS messaging, but the company seems to avoid it. They say that at the moment 80108 major goal is to establish a steady audience and work out their own writing and messaging style, and later on extend their network.

The company is now working on the trial basis, so they have to establish how to monetize the service. After building the required audience they are likely to monetize it through a choice of subscriptions, premium content, ads on the site, or click-to-call.
