Mobile web is far more than ringtones and picture downloads - it’s becoming a big market, new media channel.

A couple of companies, including Nokia, has already stared their advertising services campaigns. They provide both publishers and advertisers with web advertising services. But the thing is that the whole productivity of the mobile ads is in its web based substance.

The mobile web seems to have endless resources and opportunities: searching (via Google, Yahoo, AOL, MSN e.t.c.), viewing websites, dialing a number directly from an URL, booking plane tickets, making online purchases and that is just the beginning of the long list.

Yet there are a couple of factors that affect the growth of the industry:

• Audience awareness
• Mobile-friendly web-sites and services

Audience awareness

Nowadays GPRS and WAP are used mostly for downloading ringtones, music, pictures. What needs to be done is educating and spreading information about 3G (for streaming media and fast web-browsing). And to my mind, this is the area for the telecom operators.

Mobile-friendly web-sites

The sites need to be mobile friendly in order to make the viewing on the mobile phone easier, optimise the speed of downloading. But the software is limited and has lots of cons, because of the size (the less the better), that leads to the standstill in the branch.
