Do You Recognize the Early Signs of SMS Death?!

SMS is dead:

  1. IP seem to win eventually. When we have affordable mobile Internet, SMS will definitely lose!
  2. One day SMS will give way to the new technologies and decisions just like once X.400, Usenet, Profs email, Bulletin Board Systems and other services did. I can’t say these services were unsuccessful, some of them were quite profitable. But they will definitely give way to the new, simpler, more effective and more beneficial services.
  3. I have an example: In Canada you have to pay $100 per month for SMS shortcode. And now just imagine how much traffic and messages could you store and send for so big a sum?! Furthermore, imagine how much money making applications and services could you provide if there were fast and cheap mobile Internet in the future?
  4. In the US even now SMS is marginal

SMS will never die:

Probably one day Jabber or something like that will win the competition for high-end power user. BUT:

  1. SMS is just a completely different area - it is far from dead! You might say that almost every mobile company strives to kill SMS (Nokia with its N- and E-series; Motorola; Win5 e.t.c.). But the fact doesn’t prove anything, it doesn’t mean that SMS is dead.
  2. SMS has lots of uses, and SMS advertisement are among them. Hundreds of thousands of users all over the world have neither means nor motivation to change. The high-end of the world like the US might adopt new IP service, but the rest of the world will for a long time stay SMS-oriented! And that is a fact. While Twitter experience problems with SMS messaging, other mobile communities do not! So why not use them instead?!
  3. SMS is just limited to what it is, definitely not dead
