World Record: Call and SMS from the Summit of Everest

A rock climber from Britain has set a new world record having made a phone call from the summit of Everest.

On May 21 Rod Baber made 2 calls from the mountain’s north ridge.

The first call was made to describe the view and speak about his plans after arriving back at the camp. Them he called his wife and children.

The phone calls were made possible by the Chinese setting a mobile base station near the north ridge.

Rob Baber departed from the UK on March 30 and since the middle of April he has been acclimatizing to high altitude.

Before May 15 the expedition had been trekking up and down Everest to get used to the punishing ordeal.

The call was made at a height of 8.848 meters. Do set the record Mr Baber had to put up with high winds and temperatures of -30 degrees. The call itself was made to a voicemail account. Motorola sponsored the whole deal.

Rob didn’t have much time to make calls, because making a call means taking off the oxygen mask. In general the climbers stay on the summit of Everest for the maximum of 15 minutes.

The batteries for Motorola he used were taped to his body to make them safe and warm to make a call.

The second record set by Rob Baber was sending the highest SMS.

Just before the attempt of climbing the mount Baber said:

“Everest symbolises the greatest challenge to any climber.”
