Why are Google, Yahoo and AOL Making These Mistakes?!

Mobile_marketing.jpg

Nowadays many people try to elevate the interest in marketing through mobile devices. But the reality is that the major use of phones in the US is for calling and SMS. Mobile Internet scares the users, and mobile advertising is a complicated thing for marketers. There isn’t much to draw either of them to the area.

Nevertheless many huge companies enter the sphere. AOL (TWX) bought Third Screen Media, Microsoft bought ScreenTonic, and Yahoo! went even further - they launched their own mobile network.

There are a number of reasons for companies’ entering the market:

  1. The increasing use of the platform. The companies are buying up of online ad businesses
  2. Another aspect is the promotional factor. When a company like Google is constantly makingĀ  millions of announcements it seems that it is a way in advance of the competitors (when in reality it might be not true). Other companies try to keep up with the others. The pressure is upon companies who are thought to lag behind, so they do as everyone else does

As was already mentioned the audience isn’t eager to broaden the usage of their mobile devices. Texting and calling are quite enough for them. As for the mobile TV, the area seems more attractive than ad business. But at the same time I don’t think that many people will watch something on a small screen (unless travelling on some type of public transportation, and even in this case watching video might not be convenient)

To sum up, mobile Internet, to my mind, is nothing more than a powerful as platform. It is not what the audience is looking for!
