Vehicles Go Mobile: Ford Ahead of the Others

A new study has revealed that the integration of mobile devices into vehicles will evolve from a luxury option to a common phenomenon. Ford’s SYNC, a fully integrated entertainment and voice-activated in-car communications system for mobile devices, aims to start this process.

Ford’s SYNC system includes:

• Store content locally, meaning in-car hard disk drives or other memory devices
• Stream content into the vehicle, meaning broadcasting by satellite, RDS-TMC, and other techniques
• Pull content into the vehicle, meaning the acquisition of data as needed from the internet or other off-board storage/delivery services
• Interface with a portable device - including Bluetooth and USB connection

Mike Ippoliti, Ford research director, comments:

“As automakers seek not only to offer functionality but to improve the integration of portable entertainment and make it a selling point, the Ford SYNC represents a major shift in OEMs’ approach to the consumer electronics community. While some makes have merely supported certain media or devices, Ford’s SYNC is intended to be a selling point, using voice recognition as a technology edge, and breaking the mold of premium-only availability.”

Ford considers the modern driver to be a person who is eager to stay connected all the time. This seems to be true. Though I don’t think that such system will ever become a determining factor of car choice or even a competitive selling proposition, it open new horizons of the collaboration between car manufacturers and mobile devices’ companies. For instance if Prada can have its mobile phone, why Rolls-Royce cannot have one?!
