In 2006, having 400 million users, China’s mobile market is the world’s No. 1 cell-phone market in size.

China’s mobile subscriber base exceeded 400 million in 2006, and mobile penetration is estimated to be slightly more than 30 percent, analysts say.

The analysts claim that the number of Chinese subscribers has reached 400 million with 30% of mobile penetration. Still the figures differ with various analysts. But the fact that is evident is that the numbers are constantly growing.

Forecasts:

The Chinese market is a great magnet to operators, device manufacturers and content providers because of its size.

China research director at Gartner, Sandy Shen, claims that the growth of the market in China will come from agricultural and badly developed regions as well as from replacement sales.

At the moment SMS is the most popular mobile usage, although the new application are coming such as 2D barcode, instant messaging, GPS. Shen said that NFC (near-field communication) is also coming soon.

Although the practical benefit of 2D barcode and NFC is incredible, the penetration of the technologies is a long and gradual process due to the “”fragmentation of the technology and phone platforms, and complications in the business model.”

Shen stressed the fact the major portion of the revenue up to 2010 will come from SMS and ringtone services

The analyst explained that SMS and ringtone services are easy to use, moreover, they are more affordable than high-end applications. The fact is true, SMS can be used on all types of mobile devices and at the moment all the providers support such service.

Portio Research claims that China market is the world’s leading one in respect for SMS with over 451 million SMS sent in 2006 (more than 67% increase compared to 2005).

The whole world is waiting how China will react to the introduction of the homegrown 3G standard TD-SCDMA.

Sandy Shen commented:

“This will indicate how successful [or not] the technology will be, and when the official 3G licenses will be issued. After that, we will see other 3G technologies like W-CDMA and CDMA2000 being deployed and compete with TD-SCDMA.”

Shen expects the development of the mobile network to cause some kind of industry reorganization. For instance, she says that it is unlikely that China Unikom will control both CDMA and GSM networks.

China Unikom and China Mobile are the two major mobile operators in the country (with China Mobile having 67.9% share of the market).

The thing about Windows Mobile is that it cannot be used with your fingers alone. Smartphones doesn’t have touch screens and pocket PC version is designed to be used with with a stylus. That’s why HTC had to create their own applications to make finger control possible in HTC Touch. At the same time third party companies are also working on the problem.

What is Contact Manager

Contact Manager is a finger friendly mobile application for touch screen devices which enables scrolling, editing and calling contacts.

Differences from other similar applications:

  • Can be used with your fingers only, no need for stylus at all. If you press you finger on the left or right border of the screen it will allow you to select the letter you’re searching for, release the finger, it will show you the contact starting with this letter. Why does it work? Human being cannot point directly to the right letter on a small screen, however human are very precise while moving their finger. So you press the screen, see the feedback, adjust the position to the right letter… and you’re done!
  • You scroll the lists with your finger in a natural movement. The application has animated transition between contact list and contact details
  • Contact-Manager.PNGYou have the possibility to set a contact as favorites, which makes a perfect quicklist of contacts under the finger
  • If you want to edit the picture of the contact, simply tap on the picture and choose
  • The application is totally customizable: color, font, background image e.t.c.

The application is free for personal use.

Summary:

Contact Manager might turn out to be a very useful application for fast scrolling the contact list. Moreover, you will find it extremely natural and fast to edit contact information and change images. Another peculiar and useful option is quicklist. Using the option you can create the list of most frequently used contacts, with the help of the list you will be able to call them in about one finger movement.

What’s Del.icio.us

Del.icio.us is one of the world’s most popular services for sharing interesting sites. The users share their favorite web-pages and most attractive entries. The service has been recently adjusted to mobile users. You will be able to submit pages and entries directly from your mobile device (from a menu inside Internet Explorer).

The release says that Internet Explorer isn’t the most user-friendly application. In order to give the users the ability to submit entries from their mobile devices, the creator had to write a DLL in C++ that hooked into one of the menu extensions.

It was not as trivial as he has expected - hundreds and hundreds of lines of code. The whole procedure turned out to be quite intricate and complex.

The author mentions:

“Still, once done I could use my access to the browser to launch my “post to del.icio.us” form and prefill it with the URL and page name of PIE’s current page. From there, the form uses the public del.icio.us API to send all the info off to my del.icio.us list.”
