The last two weeks have seen as many as 3 new mobile services connected to the geographic information. The latest one is Mobile Gmaps. This is a freeware that enables displaying maps and shots from the space on the screens of mobile devices.

Right after the services Google Maps and Google Earth, Mobile Gmaps has been released. The service enable users to see maps and even more – geographically sorted space shots of incredibly high resolution.

To use the service one has to own a mobile device which J2ME and Internet access – it is also recommended to have a device with EDGE or 3G. At the moment the service is beta, and Mobile Gmaps 1.02 beta is available for download.

  • When you start the program, the connection with the server is established – it is indicated by ‘G’ or ‘3G’ in the corner of the screen
  • The navigation is conducted with the joystick or the buttons 2, 4, 6, 8. To change the scale or the display mode (map or space shots) you have to enter the menu
  • The default map is the map of the USA, but the user can change it. The maps and space shots can be saved to your device - there appears a form where you can fill in all the required information plus a number of notes
  • The information is saved in 4 parameters – latitude, longitude, scale and the character of the displaying
  • There is a possibility of search by the name (the same as the one in Google Maps)

Mobile Gmaps comes under the license agreement that enables the users to download and install freeware and use the information unless it pursues commercial goals. It should be mentioned that the commercial services on the base of Google Earth are offered at quite reasonable prices. Google Earth Plus costs $20, and Google Earth Pro - $400 (1-year license agreement). It is much cheaper than the majority of the similar services: for instance, ArcView 9.1 by ESRI costs more than $2000 in the basic configuration without additional options which need extra payments.

Moreover, Google service offers the shots from the space which is innovation in the area. If you consider the fact that the shots are accessed via the Internet, you see that the service might prove to be incredibly popular in the regions where the exact position enquiry is prohibited by the law. It is not difficult to predict the Mobile Gmaps might revolutionize the market in a short period of time.

Owing to the free access to the shots from the space, which have a high resolution, it will be possible to display the shot of the required region on the screen of your mobile device – the thing that will simplify the determination of your position. The behavior of the tourists might become less hectic, for from this time on they won’t have to use foreign languages at all. There is also the possibility of GPS-navigation through real maps. This, in its turn, will make the prohibition on the determination of geographic coordinates a mere nonsense – from this time on you can do it in every corner of the Earth without even having to use GPS-receiver.
