Mobile Viruses Threaten Smartphones

Mobile viruses spread and develop much faster than their “elder brothers” - PC viruses. Hardly has a year past since the appearance of the first kinds of mobile viruses, when the anonymous creator of harmful applications has demonstrated a new invention. It is the blocking of anti-virus software installed on Symbian smartphones.

A new type of virus under the name “Dever-C” was disclosed by the specialists of the lab F-Secure. The company started to get messages of the following content:

“FSECURE MUST DIE!!!!!! Please stop making new anti-viruses against my viruses and I will stop making new viruses against your anti-viruses. My goal is Simworks!”

The messages came from phones infected with the new virus. It turned out that Drever-C penetrates into a phone as an update of anti-virus software (such means of penetrating is also used by PC viruses). At the same time the widely spread anti-virus software by F-Secure, SimWorks and Kaspersky appear to be helpless against intrusion.

According to the experts Dever-C is just a test. The creators of harmful software are just perfecting their skills and mastery in order to create a real mobile epidemic one day. And the mentioning of the New Zealand company SimWorks is just disguising the true goals of the criminals.

CommWarrior.jpgFor the time being the damage from the virus is limited to spending some of the users’ money on useless messages. By the way, in this very way Devec-C seems more harmless than another virus under the name CommWarrior. The virus spread via wireless Bluetooth connection in the form of MMS. It sends itself to all the numbers in the phone book.

Fortunately, the owners of simple devices should not worry - the mobile criminals cannot do anything to them. It is yet early to speak about the danger of the global and destructive epidemic as the number of “smart” phones is insufficient. Still time after time small “focuses of damage” appear in different countries all over the globe.

There is another example of harmful mobile software. The application QDial26 (spread via the game Mosquito 2.0) once getting into a phone, starts sending costly SMS to the service numbers.

The virus infects mobile devices working under Symbian OS 6.0. The system is installed on Nokia 3650, 7650, 6630, Motorola A925, Siemens SX1, Samsung D710.
