The Secret of Mobile Social Networking

Social networks are already going mobile. Let’s look at the some predictions of the market.

M:Metrics was one of the first companies who compared the figures of mobile penetration into social networks. The company published that in the US and Europe 12.3 million users accessed social networks via their mobile devices.

The US users make around 7 million out of that 12.3 million total.

The users who access social networks via their handsets on a daily basis make around 1.8% in the US while in Europe the UK leads with 1.1 million and Spain following with 750 000.

Another question is the following: do the mobile users of social networks gather at mobile-only social networking destinations or they adapt the existing accounts for the use from their mobile devices. The statistics speaks in favor of the latter choice.

M:Metrics stated that MySpace and Facebook were the top social networks in both UK and US. In the US the mobile audience is around 3.7 million, while in the UK – 440 000.

In other European countries MSN is the leading social network. Still in the UK there is a homegrown service Bebo clocked with around 288 000 users.

Another issue about the mobile social networks is the average age of the users. M:Metrics states that it is a youths’ entertainment mostly.

The most active users are the ones under 25 (they tend to access the sites daily or at least several times a week).

But even within that age group there is a split into two sub-groups: 13-17-year-olds and 18-24-year-olds. In the countries like In France, Germany, Italy and Spain the largest audience comes from the first sub-group, and in the US and UK – from the second.

Such development of social networks couldn’t have been missed by huge manufacturers. For instance, Coca-Cola has launched mobile destinations on MySpace and Facebook in China and the US.

The manufacturer that it is creating a mobile social network under the brand Sprite where the members can create their profiles, upload photos and communicate with each other.
