Greenpeace claims: iPhone IS Dangerous

Just recently Apple met “Greenpeace” half-way claiming the reduction of a number of harmful materials in the production of iPhone.

This or that way, the struggle of Greenpeace wasn’t in vain. Steve Jobs, the head of the company, has recently promised to make the production “more environmentally friendly”. Apple will avoid using harmful substances (bromine etc). The transition to more harmless substances will take place in 2008.

Of course, Greenpeace have a lot of other complaints against Apple (reprocessing of old Macintoshes, for instance, is one of the most acute issues). But at the same time, Greenpeace suppose that the rejection of harmful substances is a big step forward.

However, the tacit agreement between the companies wasn’t to last for a long time. This week the representatives of the environment protecting company officially stated the discovery of harmful substances in iPhone.

iPhone.jpgThere have been found substances (phthalates), which are prohibited for small kids in San-Francisco and EU countries, in the vinyl polymer plastic used for the production of the headphones for the device. Moreover, there have been found bromine compounds in the components of the device. In addition to that, Greenpeace underlined that fact that the battery is glued to the body of the phone which may cause difficulties while reprocessing the device.

After the publication of the results of the research The Center for Environmental Health informed Apple that in 60 days after its reception court hearing will be held. The company didn’t inform its customers (by a sticker or in any other way) about what materials are used in the production, it means that Apple violated the law and must be punished.

iPhone manufacturers have already reacted to Greenpeace’s statement. According to Apple  the chemical strucute of all the products completely corresponds to the established limitations of harmful substance usage (RoHS). The representatives of the company reminded the fact that by 2008 they will have removed vinyl chloride polymers and harmful fire-resistant materials  from the production completely.
