New Faces of Blogging: Interview with Dusan Belic

Don’t you think it is useful to know people who work in the same niche as you personally? I often asked myself this question, and finally came to the decision that it is worth it! As a rule bloggers are great people, they are very communicative cooperative. My point was to make a short interview with the authors who I most frequently read and consider to be credible sources of information.

The first blogger I contacted was Dusan Belic. He is the editor of the blog IntoMobile (they define themselves as “a website dedicated to keeping you up to date with all the news and buzz in the world of mobile technology”). He lives in Serbia (East Europe).
Here is the questionnaire with the answers provided by Dusan:

1. How long have you been in the mobile industry?

Almost three years now. I’ve started SymbianWatch.com (later integrated into IntoMobile.com) at the beginning of 2006, but I was always interested in mobile technology. Hence, I’ve been playing with smartphones since 2004.

2. Why did you choose mobile devices and technologies to be the major topic of your site?

When the first PDA devices (i.e. Palm Pilot) appeared, I was amazed just how liberating they seemed. The ability to take your work with you was a promising future. As a matter of fact, it seemed like the true freedom. Smartphones were natural evolution which promised that you won’t need two or more devices anymore, but a single powerful device which we see regularly nowadays. In addition, mobile phones are contemporary phenomenon that just couldn’t pass by me so easily.

3. What are you trying to focus on when you work on the site?

To keep my readers happy of course. Most of my work is to inform the readers about the new mobile technologies and the latest gadgets. I find that to be quite important, so that people know what choices are there on the marketplace.

4. Do you consider yourself to be a specialist in some special branch of the mobile industry, if yes, in which and why?

I guess Symbian OS has always been my love. The devices based on this mobile OS are known to be quite reliable. I own two Symbian-based devices – Nokia N93 and Nokia 5500.

5. At what audience you target your entries, I mean who do you think are your potential readers?

Educated buyers and of course the people who want to know what’s “hot” these days in the mobile marketplace.

6. Do you think your blog/site is interesting and attractive for the users?

I certainly hope so. We try our best to do that.

8. What mobile web-resources do you trust and why? (which sites do you think are the most reliable sources of information)

Handset manufacturers’ websites are there to tell us what was the rumor and what not. Yeah, they’ll hide bits of information, but at the end they know their products better than anyone else. Then again, they may want to evade talks about bugs and issues…

Personal Info block

1. What is your inspiration to work?

I just love mobile technology and writing about it. Sometimes, it’s tricky to discipline yourself, especially after the great Friday night, but then again – I think of it as the work that needs to be done.
2. What mobile device do you own? Why?

Nokia N93 – I grabbed way before N95 was announced and it has the great 3.2 MP camera with actually optical zoom, WiFi and more.
Nokia 5500 – my weekend phone. I’m known to drop things when drink. This baby is water and shock proof.
Nokia N800 Internet Tablet – great device for checking your email and latest blog posts from the bed.

3. What additional services you use? Why?

GMail Mobile – I rely on GMail for my email needs. Bloglines Mobile – the same reason here. I’m not actually the big user of social networks…

4. What are the major tendencies in the mobile industry at the moment?

Convergence, of course — put as many features as possible on a single device. In addition, revamping user interfaces – something Apple brought on the table with its iPhone.

5. What are you major interests in the mobile industry?

Convergence.

6. What manufacturer do you consider to be the most reliable one? Why?

Nokia – they make probably the most reliable mobile phones. I also like several Sony Ericsson models.

7. Do you treat a mobile phone as a means of communication or a lot more?

Much more. I play games on it, keep my expenses on track, check my email, write ideas and sometimes even do some writing on it.

8. How do you see the development of the industry in the forthcoming decades?

Nokia will remain the dominant force of the industry, because it has all the angles covered. On the other hand, Sony Ericsson is one company to watch for. As a matter of fact I like their strategy more. They focus on what they know best and buy other, third-party solutions for other things (applications and services). Similarly to Apple, Nokia does most of its software and hardware development.

9. What technology do you consider to be the most promising one? Why?

Nano Projector integrated into mobile phones. It’s easy to imagine using the mobile phone as your main entertainment device with nano projectors built-in. You’ll be finally able to go beyond the small screen.
