Online Dating Services are Going Mobile
Monday, 10.09.2007Match.com – one of the hugest U.S. dating services – has recently gone mobile. MatchMobile, the name of the new service, will be first available only in the US, later on in the UK and Canada, planning to extend to as many as 9 countries by the end of the year. The service seems very simple, but the only thing that is somehow strange is that such a basic thing as getting e-mails from suitors on the mobile devices costs $5 per month. You see that online dating services have already gained popularity with the audience, and it is no surprise that the mobile versions of these services are experiencing a rapid growth in the area. Neu.de, one of the biggest online dating services in Germany, has just claimed that it will be launching a mobile version for over 5 million of its subscribers.
The main features will include:
- Location based services. Users will be able to find people from the near-by regions
- Anonymous video & voice functions
Simultaneously, but at the same time separately, the TV channels Gaydate TV and The Dating Channels (the both owned by the Euro Digital Corporation) have launched mobile video dating services. The services will allow the users to browse the other users’ profiles on their mobile devices and send video messages. The users will be notified about every new message. The Euro Digital Corporation stated that the both services will be advertised and promoted through the TV channels, but the idea is that the services should function as standalone services.
The mobile dating service, provided by Neu.de, is built on Mobestar’s mDate platform. The platform has been used by other online dating services to create the mobile versions. The peculiar fact is that Neu.de has published the detail of the deal (the thing that usually remains uncovered). The company is paying 30.000 euros ($41.000) to use the platform. Neu.de will offer two types of subscription: pay-as-you-go for around $0.55 a pop or a monthly subscription of around $14 per month. During the first 3 months of collaboration Mobestar will get all the revenues, later on they will be split 50:50.
Meanwhile Euro Digital Corporation and its partner D2see haven’t released the details of their collaboration. Apart from the direct fees the services might bring in, it sounds like there will be a healthy stream of messaging revenue developing off the back of them.
